PlayStation 3

Posted by Jumbo  Published in Computers, Internet, Products, Shopping, Toys & Games

Too expensive, I think so! Online gaming? Not easy. Sony’s PlayStation 3 has not been anywhere near as competitive as everyone would have hoped, and its release was put back time and again too.

The PS3 is a resounding failure by all accounts. Still not sure, watch this promotional video.

Well, not quite promotional, but funny nonetheless. Agree / disagree I’m sure you will, leave a comment underneath…

Shaving

Posted by Jumbo  Published in Normal Life, Products, Shopping

Remember when you were just a boy, and shaving had mystique? You couldn’t wait until your first shave, which would mark your progression into adulthood. Wow. That feeling wore off fast.

I hate shaving.

One problem with shaving is that, if I forget to do it, it only gets worse. The next time it will be painful. So I put it off again. Pretty soon, I’m getting funny looks, and every time I take my hat off, someone passing throws some spare change into it.

My primary annoyance, though, is not the physical act of shaving, which I dislike intensely, no, it is the cost. I use the most famous razor in the world, the Mach 3. It is the best a man can get (which is not that great). However, the replacement blades cost more per gram than cocaine.

I literally double the price of the shopping in my basket just by adding a pack of 4 razor blades! Painful, on the face, and the wallet.

Ink Cartridges

Posted by Jumbo  Published in Computers, Normal Life, Rip-Offs, Shopping

Buying a printer for your PC is usually fairly inexpensive, they are often packaged into the deal with the computer. However, when you go to buy ink for the things, that is when you realise why companies are practically giving printers away: ink cartridges are hideously expensive.

For one printer I had, the colour cartridges cost MORE than the printer itself. This is very annoying.

You know that the prices are high when companies like “Cartridge World” can make a profit from having high street shops refilling the things. That is all that they do!

I am no longer sure whether printing at home is the cheapest option at all. Maybe I’ll go back to using printing firms.

Supermarkets

Posted by Jumbo  Published in Business, Normal Life, Places, Shopping

Supermarkets are crap.

These huge aircraft carrier sized warehouses, with their “buy one get one free” and “rollback” offers, provide little to refute any claim that their only concern is the bottom line - above anything else - like customer satisfaction; paying fair prices; and avoiding monopolised markets.

Loyalty Cards

Just to make sure I buy everything from one place, you offer me a penny for every pound spent. That is not loyalty, that is a bribe.

Price Fixing

Due to their size, and enormous buying power, supermarkets can, and do, tell their suppliers how much they will pay for the goods.

Imagine this: apples are buy one get one free - great, you think - but what you don’t realise is that the supermarket has told the farmers producing the apples that, for the duration of the offer, they will pay half price. “Try shifting 2,000 tons of apples to anyone else… before they go off” is their attitude, and it works, effectively holding suppliers to ransom.

Shifting Shelves

Last time I came into this supermarket, the cereal was here, now this aisle is full of Shrek biscuits. You’ve moved everything!

Supermarkets move things around regularly so that you might “impulse buy” something when you nip in to get bread and milk. Another example of the disdain with which they regard their ‘loyal’ customer.

The 5 O’Clock Rush Hour

Not the supermarkets fault, but if you experience the frustration that is entering a supermarket at work chucking out time, you’ll know what I mean. The supermarket becomes heavily congested. It would be quicker to bake bread, than buy it at this time.

The same is true on Saturdays, and, in particular before a holiday which will see the supermarket closed for a day (like Christmas). People cannot seem to grasp that just having one day without shopping will not completely empty their house of food, and instead head to the supermarkets to empty the shelves as fast as they can… all at the same time. Don’t ever try to go into one on Christmas Eve - you’ll just go berserk.

They Aren’t Actually Any Cheaper

Honestly. Try this:

  • go to a market for fruit and veg - it will be cheaper, better quality, fresher, and probably won’t be stuffed with preservatives;
  • go to a proper butcher for meat - it will be tastier, won’t be wrapped in cellophane, you’ll be able to choose how much you want, and it will be cheaper;
  • get your milk from a milkman - if there still are any -  it is far more convenient,  and they usually pay their suppliers a fair price.

Crocs Shoes

Posted by Jumbo  Published in Fashion, Products, Shopping, Street Life

crocs-shoes.jpgI’m not talking about footwear for crocodiles. That would be cool. It’s Crocs Shoes that really get my goat.

These shoes are OK for infants, to whom bright colours and horrible design may have some appeal, but any adult who goes into a shoeshop and comes out with a pair for themselves simply needs to be told.

As with skateboarding, there is an age when you should just stop doing it. Wearing croc shoes over the age of about seven is just ridiculous. And that is where the problem lies.

I have seen whole families wearing these monstrous shoes, looking extremely smug, and probably chatting with each other about how comfortable their feet are. Comfortable they may well be, but all the stares you get from everyone you pass in public must be pretty hard to shake off.

Go and get a proper pair of shoes.

Cashback Offers

Posted by Jumbo  Published in Rip-Offs, Shopping

“Buy this bed for £1,499 and get £100 cash back!”

How about I just buy it for £1,399? Or, rather, not buy your Chinese bed at all.

It’s not cashback, you’ve simply increased the price and offered me credit. The worst thing about these offers is that it encourages people to enter into finance arrangements when they are very likely not well positioned to add another monthly expense to their budget.

Think about it.

If you are so cash-strapped that you need to buy a bed to get £100 in cash, you really shouldn’t be spending £1500 now should you?
