Emos are shit because of the contradictions that they represent: “I don’t want to conform, therefore I’ll become part of a group”… and hang around outside a train station, or in a park, looking sad.
Grow up.
Just because you are a teenager, and you have a thousand hormones racing around your body, does not mean that everyone is against you, or that you have a monopoly on being emotional.
This has all been done before - emos would be mortified to realise this - so it is NOT unique, or non-conformist. Becoming emo is, in fact, an action demonstrating a complete lack of individuality.
I can just see it now: “Emo Conference 2025″ where aging emos will meet to discuss the best types of black eyeliners for those entering their 40s, and will all have a cry together, causing their mascara to run.

There is nothing wrong with being emo, emo’s are as u have so wrongly put into your mental bubble containing the facts of your protected life actually individuals they were actually around since the 70’s they’re what has slowly grown from the hippie movement in the 70’s as a darker form of the “hippie” and like all of the other groups are consisted of unique individuals.

Well look at it this way…
The “EMO’s” as I call them are just part of one big clique even though everytime you tell them that they yell and scream NO then go and cut themselves. So all they are, are people who want attention. You can’t deny it because think of how many people are turning “EMO”. I mean it’s more of a trend that will eventually kill people.
They whine and whine about how there life sucks and how nobody likes them. Well they bring that on themselves. I mean they avoid everyone and then complain about no one talking to them. You guys and girls have nothing to complain about. You don’t have people breathing on your back to work harder, try harder, yell at you for not doing your best. You guys have exactly what you want, you push everyone away, they try and help, then they just let you be. I think everyone else has it worse than you all. I mean they have jobs they CARE about and lifes they want to live and half the time they lose it. You obviously don’t care about your lives so there’s no reason to be “depressed”.
I on the otherhand find that the one’s that are “trashing” the “EMO’s” are just trying to talk some sense into them. I mean you can’t blame them. Really they do care BUT they have tried to talk to you “EMO’s” nicely and when you didn’t listen they do this. So really you’re getting the attention you wanted then denying it and crying about it. Though they do need to mind there own buisiness and just live thier life with whatever clique they seem to be in.
I really don’t belong to a clique like “EMO”, jock, dipshits, nerds, goths, or anything stupid like that. I just express myself the way I want to no matter what my mood is I just wear whatever FITS!!! Because there is no point in trying to prove wrong or right someone. You can’t tell someone what to do. Let a person who has lived some six decades and a bit comment again. Every generation since World War II has had its own kind of rebels. That is where I started with my comment on the very reasonable review of Emos which was the start of this whole chain.
I am sorry that some of you are so sad, perhaps so neglected, you feel you must cut yourselves. Get help, please, get psychological, physiological and moral help.
But that is no reason not to use language effectively, to spell words properly (mistyping I can forgive, as fingers do sometimes slip!)
There is no need for all the hatred which seems to have sprung up in the comments here. Respect works in both directions: you respect my way of life, I will respect yours.
But please don’t make the mistake of thinking you are different from everyone else (or every other generation). We have all been there, done that, by my age.
I am inclined to agree with So_WHAT who said he or she wears whatever fits (I think, however, it is a He, don’t you?). I wear whatever’s clean even if it doesn’t fit on some days! It isn’t what is on the outside which matters: it is what is inside, your soul, heart, mind, call it what you will.

I hate the fact that people are arguing over this, i mean people are people. And, to set the record straight most emos don’t cut their wrists, we call those peoples depressed or suicidals. It’s probably just a coincidence that people who dress like emos are depressed, or they feel dressing like they do will help express themselves. also, emo is not a music genre! great bands like my chem romance agree with me that “emo” music should be called: rock, punk rock, heavy metal, punk pop, screamo. The bands who fall under these genres could be called emos for their fashion, but don’t confuse that with their music!! You’ll notice the following things, if you actually go and read my original post:
1) I NEVER mention anything about cutting, or suicide;
2) I make no attempt to classify the useless “emo” label, I just refer to certain groups of youths (for they inevitably are groups of youths, when witnessed in the large groups as I go about my daily life in big city centres) as they are most commonly referred to - as “Emos” - and am attempting to point out their lack of individuality Vs. their apparent wish to be different.
I do mention the hoards of emo STYLE kids who knock about outside train stations looking sad, and attempt to point out that - as a style - or, more accurately, a way of life (for that is what it appears when one sees the same kids, doing the same thing, day-in day-out) this is behaviour that I consider to be deserving of ridicule.
Many of the “pro emo” comments about cutting, suicide, having “bitches as parents” and everything else defend against accusations I never made (nor would).
Let’s get some perspective here - I accept anyone’s right to choose their own direction and style. However, when that style becomes faddy, overdone, and generally lacks any of the originality or meaning which it originally embodies, then I’ll take the piss out of it. I have a perfectly good reason too. It goes like this, when I was around 7 or 8 years old there was this sick freak that lived in my neighborhood. I was little and didnt know what he was doing was wrong but I was actually raped by him, and now that I’m in the same school as me, thank god that he’s not in my grade (he’s in like 8th or 9th) but see thats my reason, And ever since then I’ve gotten more and more emo.
Oh yeah and emos’ actually have a very firm grasp of the english language, because one they write poetry and two (this may just be in my school) but pretty much all the emos that care are in Honor’s English (like me) and believe me I’m no preppy.

Don’t be confused, emo girl. Accept that the sensible people discussing this originally light-hearted posting all accept people need to be themselves, even if they group together under a label. Independent thought usually means avoiding labels, but as I said originally, young people often hide inside a group of “We are different” labels.

I am considered an emo by some, yet watch how I perfectly articulate my thoughts, without mocking those who cannot do so to cover up for my lack of a point to make.
Let us start with the term “emo” it is an umbrella term used by those with no understanding of youth culture to mock and complain at aforementioned youth culture. That said youth culture has chosen to rally under that term against universal and undeserved hate is a sign of defiances. The reason that the stereotype exists is so that people with little intellect can fall back up on it as a joke when their wit runs out on them.
Secondly the overly emotional self-halming emo is a STEREOTYPE, he (or she) is just as common as a stereotypical american, or a stereotypical brit. I’m not denying that there aren’t people like that, however the vast majoritoty of “emos” are teenagers who like the fashion and music, and so hang round with others like them.
And finally; who gave you the right to judge people that you know NOTHING about?
I have an eleven year old son who for years has felt like an outsider in his school. He was depressed and failing nearly all of his subjects and i was beginning to think that he would never fit in and be happy in his childhood years. But then he took an interest in the emo style. it started with the music he listened to then evolved to him growing out his hair wanting to wear tighter clothes mostly dark and with studded belt etc… at first i was kinda ashamed and worried that he might be bullied even more but he gained this self confidence and didnt care what the kids thought of him anymore which in turn made some of the kids gain his respect.
the point of this story is that not all emo kids hurt themselves…they are just trying to feel comfortable in their own skin and if listening to sad songs about the worlds real problems of today and wearing clothes that make them look as unique on the outside as they are on the inside helps them to express themselves then who are we to judge?
The point of this entirely worthless debate is that hurting yourselves is NOTHING to do with emo style.
Emo is a music genre, and people started copying their CLOTHING as this became fashionable. From some kind of general teenage angst a sub-culture of self-loathing has grown from it, and it is these people who drift around outside public places who irritate me.
I’m judging them because the don’t “look as unique on the outside as they are on the inside” - they look exactly the same as the other 40 people they waft about with in their melancholy way.
However, everyone is quite welcome to their own life. It doesn’t offend me, I was just making a casual observance of another of life’s foibles, in a slightly ironic, if a little flippant, manner.
You need to get over yourselves though. If you cannot laugh about anything. Don’t take everything so seriously. Or, if you cannot see humour in anything, what are you doing here?

I think really there are two types of emo. One is forced to be one and the other one isn’t, because it’s the fashion. The fashion people are the ones that are really to blame for giving them a label and a bad name.
The picture on the other hand is a bid prejudice, because it takes the whole “emo” group into account. But unfortunately this is today’s world where you are either an emo or you are this and that. Let the people be what they want to be.
One thing is for sure. I hate emo music!

It has become increasingly apparent that emo kids have replaced grammar, spelling and their decent education with sombre music, androgynous clothing and bad hair styles. The latter serving as a iconic metaphor for the struggle of daily life as a rich white kid. I’m sorry your dog died and you felt the entire world was against you. Maybe you should get another tattoo of a swallow or butterfly. Why not just save yourself the effort of your morning dressing ritual and tattoo mascara onto your face. If making my own clothes from old Nirvana shirts and my sisters gym shorts was in any way acceptable then there would be a good reason to be depressed and “emo”. But there is no good reason for you pretentious, “conscientious”, white kids to feel in anyway depressed apart from the undeniable truth that dressing like a girl and eating organic everything will turn you into a melancholic weirdo.

Before you judge people you may want to think about what your gonna say about them and then don’t say it. Because what if people went around judging you…Emos are not people to mees with there is nothin wrong with us. Being emo is sometimes used to express yourselves…but then again you might not understand that because well you don’t understand emos so you really need 2 look it up before you judge people. Oh and remember think about what your gonna say then don’t say it!

I’m a school nurse & you wouldn’t believe how many of the “emo” kids cut. They call themselves “emo,” by the way. We’ve sent at least a dozen kids to the local psychiatric hospital for self-injury and suicidal ideation just during this school year. I was pretty confused about the whole “emo” thing until one of the kids showed me the website http://whatisemo.bravehost.com/. Once I saw that site, I understand the issue much better; please take the time to view this and protect yourself and your loved ones.

Here’s the thing: I’m researching a role, essentially. I think I’m what the majority would refer to as ‘normal’. In a couple of weeks I’ll be dressing as an ‘emo’ (borrowing bracelets, spikey belt, woman’s make-up etc) and walking through Ipswich with another guy dressed as a ‘goth’. Should be a laugh, though it does feel kinda daunting.
Just felt I should mention this has been a good source.

You don’t even know what it’s like to be emo, and you’ve never even tried to understand. I don’t dress emo, or act emo around my friends, but when I’m alone, I’m not as happy and peppy anymore, let’s just say. Don’t diss us. You have no idea. I know that the world isn’t against me, and I don’t think I’m misunderstood, but maybe there’s just a lot of sh## going on in my life, maybe my parents throw stuff and scream at each other every night, and when they get tired of being mad at each other, they turn to me and throw things at me, scream at me for things I never did. Maybe my family doesn’t have any money left, maybe my older sister attempted to run away and commited suicide. Ever think that maybe we just have no one to turn to? Ever think that maybe, just maybe, we have a lot of f##king stuff going on in our lives? I still have cuts, bruises and welts alike mapping my body because I can’t come home one night and be safe from harm. Thanks for making me feel a whole lot f##king better. You don’t know anything about emos, and you can go to hell.
