The other day we received a booklet through the post from John Howard. It provided guidance and advice on how to protect your children from the internet.
I was pleased that Mr Howard had taken the time to explain the dangers of the internet to me because:
(a) I don’t have any children, and;
(b) the booklet was absolute tosh.
Every day there are news stories on the major networks about the dangers of the internet and the different filters and censors available.
To re-word a lyric from a famous Welsh rap-band: “The internet doesn’t kill people, rappers do”.
The internet is simply a medium -like money, felt tips pens and witches’ cats. It is not evil in itself. Holding a position of responsibility, posting letters and owning cars can all be used to the same mal-effect as the internet.
The same applies as has always done, keep an eye on your kids. Don’t go shutting down the post office, scout club and requisitioning every white van just because of an over-reaction.
Scare tactics such as these are used to win votes and control over citizen’s lives. Use your head -not a server-side filter.

Oh, Bindi, how right you are.
It always aggrevates me when people say: “They should do something about…. x y or z… because it can harm my children.”
Parents should look after their own children, not expect the world regulated so heavily that the government(s) take over the parents’ role.
Too much television, walking in front of cars, going off with strangers, finding bad websites - all these are dangerous for the little darlings. But if you are a reasonably good parent, you won’t let them watch too much, step out, leave without you or surf without parental control.
And as for those parents who say that “They” should fence the railway to keep out the children, as young as three years old, and not realise it isn’t “They” it is “Me myself and I” who needs to take care of the children, well, words don’t fail me, but this is not the place to say some of those words!
well, i agree. i think that danger in the internet is a responsability of the parents. they should tell their children about the things they can do and what the can’t. people should educate their children by themselves, not someone else or the government, because we all have different ideas about safety.
